Plant-based meat is basically meat derived from plants. It is manufactured to taste, look, and feel like traditional meat from animal products. According to the Good Food Institute (GFI) India, the country has seen several start-ups enter this space over the last two years, retailing their products in over 19 cities across India. Blue Tribe is the co-founders’ personal venture to replace the usage of meat in the food supply chain in India.
Imagine Meats
Imagine Meats is a plant-based meat initiative by Genelia and Riteish Deshmukh to create a world which makes healthier and conscious eating choices. It is on a mission to serve cruelty-free meat which keeps the environment and your taste buds happy. Imagine Meats’ products claim to look, smell and taste just like chicken and mutton. Despite the many processes and additives, Imagine Meats products claim to be free of MSG, food colouring, preservatives, dairy, and they offer anywhere from 6.6g to 17.67g (per 100g) of protein, depending on the product you choose.
Beyond Meat
Allana Group subsidiary Tiffany Foods has started to import Beyond Meat patties and sausages into the Indian markets. The products are being popularly marketed by Urban Platter, an e-commerce site, mainly in metropolitans and tier-1 cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore. Beyond Meat is a leading plant-based meat company offering a portfolio of revolutionary plant-based meats made from simple ingredients without GMOs, no added hormones or antibiotics, and 0 mg of cholesterol per serving. Founded in 2009, Beyond Meat products are designed to have the same taste and texture as animal-based meat while being better for people and the planet.
Tata Consumer Products
Tata Consumer Products, a fast-moving consumer goods company with its corporate headquarter in Mumbai, and a part of the Tata Group, has forayed into India’s plant-based meat market with its own brand – Tata Simply Better. A simple search on e-commerce giant Amazon India showcases four plant-based meat products: Chicken Burger Patty, Awadhi Seekh Kabab, Chicken Spicy Fingers and Chicken nuggets.
CCL Products
CCL Products, Hyderabad-based coffee brand, has launched its plant-based meat products brand ‘Continental Greenbird’ in India. With this launch, CCL plans to tap into the growing consumer set who are looking for sustainable products while bridging the gap between meat cravings and guilt-free habits. With Continental Greenbird, CCL will initially offer four plant-based meat varieties: Chicken-like nuggets, Chicken-like seekh kebab, Chicken-like sausage, and Mutton-like keema. All their products are made from plant-based protein which are derived from Green pea, Chickpea, and in the case of Keema from soya.
GREENEST is a plant-based foods brand created by Upstablish Food Technologies Private Limited, a food tech company working to address the fast-growing protein and nutritional needs of India. The brand currently has a line of plant-based kebabs, meatballs, burger patties and keema, all made out of textured soy proteins and already sold in 9 foodservice locations across New Delhi and Bangalore.
ITC Limited
ITC Limited, the Indian FMCG major, has launched a range of products into the country’s fledgling market for plant-based meat alternatives. The company, best known in food for brands such as Bingo snacks and Aashirvaad kitchen ingredients, is rolling out “a host” of plant-based meat products, starting with burger patties and nuggets.
Shaka Harry
