Suntory Holdings, a global giant in both the alcohol and non-alcohol beverages industry, announced that in order to accomplish net zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) across its entire value chain by 2050, it will target to halve the greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
The company will also speed up its global fight against climate change by gradually implementing internal carbon pricing to its group companies. The company also signed the ‘Business Ambition for 1.5°C’, a campaign run by the Science Based Targets initiative in collaboration with the UN Global Compact and the We Mean Business coalition to hold global temperature increases to 1.5°C above the pre-industrial levels.
Tak Niinami, CEO of Suntory Holdings stated- “As a company with products that rely on the blessings of nature and with a corporate mission ‘To Create Harmony with People and Nature,’ it is a business imperative for us to step change our actions to address climate change. Since our inception more than 120 years ago, Suntory has been committed to sustainability across our entire business under the founding spirit of ‘Giving Back to Society’. The entire group pursues our vision of ‘Growing for Good’ as One Suntory to protect the environment and make positive changes in the communities where we work and live.”
In 2020, the company reviewed its ‘Environmental Vision toward 2050’, targeting net zero GHG emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. To contribute to realizing a carbon-free society, the company has been putting in its efforts to introduce renewable energies, consider utilization of next-generation infrastructure and working as a team with value chain stakeholders, while maintaining its present energy conservation initiatives.
Presently, the company has revised its ‘Environmental Targets toward 2030’ and committed to alleviate GHG emissions by 50 per cent from its direct operations and by 30 per cent across its entire value chain.
The group will carry further its attempts to advocate sustainable management and contribute to managing social issues on a global level. In the spirit of One Suntory, Beam Suntory, a subsidiary of Suntory Holdings and a global leader in premium spirits headquartered in Chicago, US, will make public its bold sustainability strategy, which makes long-haul commitments to leave enduring positive influences on the environment, consumers, and communities.
