Mosa Meat, the pioneer in cultivated beef, has submitted its first application for market approval in the United Kingdom. This submission focuses on cultivated fat as an ingredient, which can be blended with plant-based ingredients to create delicious beefy foods like hamburgers, shepherd’s pie, and meatballs. Cell-cultivated products are grown directly from animal cells, aiming to offer an innovative solution to current challenges associated with meat production. Mosa Meat made history in 2013 by unveiling the world’s first cultivated beef burger in London.

“We are thankful to the Food Standards Agency for engaging in valuable presubmission consultations with our food safety team. We included their valuable feedback and have We submitted our cultivated beef fat dossier for formal review. In essence, the regulatory sandbox is already making an impact on attracting innovative companies like ours to the UK market.”

“Fat is the soul of flavor, and we’ve developed an ingredient that enriches the culinary experience consumers expect from conventional beef. This innovation not only enhances our Mosa Burgers but also has the potential to elevate plant-based products, which often struggle to replicate the full sensory experience of meat.”

“By starting with cultivated fat, we’re paving the way to introduce our first burgers to consumers while staying true to our long-term vision. Our initial products will combine cultivated and plant-based ingredients, leveraging our in-house expertise in both areas. Mosa Meat remains committed to building a more diverse and resilient food system—one that satisfies global demand while being kind to the planet.”

      – Maarten Bosch, CEO of Mosa Meat.

This exciting announcement follows a period of significant momentum for Mosa Meat. In December, Mosa Meat submitted the first cultivated beef request to sell in the European Union, as well as a request to sell in Switzerland, demonstrating its commitment to rigorous safety standards. In February it smashed its crowdfunding goal in 24 minutes and raised an additional £3.2M (€3.8M). And in March, Mosa Meat was one of eight companies worldwide chosen for the FSA regulatory sandbox that has been funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT)

Cultivated meat offers the opportunity to strengthen the UK and Europe’s food system by reducing reliance on imports, enhancing food security, and contributing to a more resilient, sustainable supply chain. According to an independent peer-reviewed Life Cycle

Assessment: Cultivated beef production is projected to produce up to 93% fewer greenhouse gases, use 95% less land, and use 78% less water when compared to industrial meat production.

Additionally, cultivated meat production could offer the opportunity to free up land for re-wilding habitats and more regenerative farming practices, which would naturally reduce emissions and improve soil health. Moreover, the automated process through which cultivated meat is produced, and the sterile environment of its manufacturing will eliminate or drastically reduce the use of antibiotics and the risk for pathogens, contaminants, and foodborne illnesses associated with factory animal farming.
