Background
For Unilever to competently operate in the new digital world, we will need to significantly transform our processes, behaviours, cross-organization structures & supporting IT eco-system to enable fast, accurate and seamless end-to-end management of the data, content and codes that are directly related to the individual components and products (CUs) we buy, produce, sell and advertise. Real-time, high quality, product-linked data for product development, procurement, production and associated communication, combined with a feedback loop of external market and consumer data for better decision making, will be critical to achieving speed and agility in bringing winning products to market. It will also be fundamental to managing costs and driving business growth. This new approach will need to be rooted in deep behaviour change in how we create, publish and reuse data and content, that is right-first-time, and then augmented by new digital/data/robotic technologies to accelerate the e2e product data management process with speed and accuracy.
Deliverables include seamless, interdependent interfaces (no one big, single system) between internal product and project data systems, linking to external market data and third-party business partners who also create data, to enable real-time performance tracking and a feedback loop for decision making. Current initiatives, some already in play, that need to dovetail towards an overall solution and then accelerate are: IPM, SVOT, PLM (incl PI-tool), MDM Ops & BPM, SAP ECC, the Master Data Program and CARA (standing for Content Authoring Reuse and Assembly) to manage product content and to orchestrate the processes we use to create and communicate it, covering all physical and digital touchpoints (e.g. physical pack, brand.com, ecommerce, Carelines, SmartLabel, etc). CARA is an integrated capability which will enable Unilever to achieve the following Vision: “Our product content is comprehensive, correct, readily available and efficiently produced. It is seamlessly reused across all our channels enabling us to communicate in an accurate, consistent and engaging way about our products with our consumers”. CARA will play a key role in ‘defragmenting’ end-to-end processes, systems accountabilities and user experience – bringing clarity, visibility and control and delivering a step change improvement in speed, efficiency and quality.
In order to deliver this vision, we need to drive the change in ways of working and adoption of the CARA tool to enable Product Data Management in each of the Business Units across all the Business Groups.
