FSSAI retracted previous regulations on blending of oil. The Food Safety and Standards Authority, supreme regulator has withdrawn the order that prohibits the blending of Mustard oil.
Previously made order carried a proposed regulation to prohibit the blending of Mustard oil and its production by FBOs. This order was passed by the authority in September.
Delhi based oil mill had gone to the Delhi High Court against the order, saying that FSSAI cannot operationalise the regulations with immediate effect without giving time to the FBOs and subsequently HC stayed the order.
Amid all these, FSSAI issued a new draft notification pertaining to calling up FBOs for discussion and seeking proposals from the various stakeholders.
Under FSS ( Food Product Standards and Food Additives), the allowed limit for blending is upto 20% for the mustard oil until now.
“After due consideration of the representation of the stakeholders it has been decided to withdraw the direction dated 23/9/2020 for operationalisation of Draft Food Safety and Standards – Prohibition and Restriction on Sales-Amendment Regulations 2020,” the order stated.
Currently, this September’s order retraction by the apex food regulator, FSSAI comes in the wake of the moment when body comprised of certain FBOs made a representation before the court.
The September order was issued on directions from the Government of India, aimed at facilitating manufacture and sale of pure mustard oil for domestic consumption
