India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI), under the guidance of the ministry, is planning strict fines against companies that do not follow food safety requirements.
“FSSAI monitors food products, and we are striving to align with global standards. We are tightening regulations to prevent companies from misusing advertisements or taking shortcuts to grow in India. Strict norms and penalties are being considered for firms that compromise on food safety.”
– Minister Chirag Paswan.
On May 12, the FSSAI introduced new rules to ensure that dairy analogue products are accurately sold and labeled and receive proper licenses. For two months, starting April 16, anyone can submit their opinions on these draft changes, which respond to reports of misleading sales.
Addressing trade concerns,
“Tariff negotiations through international agreements are sensitive and must be managed diplomatically. However, he emphasized India’s self-reliance and potential as a global food provider. India doesn’t need to depend on others for resources. I envision India becoming a global food basket.”
– Minister Chirag Paswan
On the subject of GST, Paswan highlighted the need for simplification.
“I want to serve as a bridge between the government and industry. While the GST Council is the final authority, I continue to recommend changes for a mutually beneficial tax structure.”
– Minister Chirag Paswan.
The minister has acknowledged that they keep talking about simplifying the GST rates on food items. Since loose popcorn attracts a lower GST rate than the same product sold in packs with additives, those in the industry are calling for a better system.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which consolidates various acts & orders that have hitherto handled food-related issues in various ministries and departments. FSSAI has been created to lay down science-based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.
The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, is the administrative ministry for the implementation of FSSAI. The chairperson and chief executive officer of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) have already been appointed by the Government of India. The chairperson is in the rank of Secretary to the Government of India.
