The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) have released an order for instituting a Steering Committee for the Eat Right India (ERI) campaign, which is focussed on eating habits of the people. The Steering Committee will comprise of 17 members, including 9 recommended by the FSSAI, one each from training partner/hygiene rating agencies/auditors and FoSTaC partner, three members from industry and development partners each.
FSSAI, in a declaration, has asserted that to boost up and strengthen the ERI initiative across the nation, consumer awareness for social and behavioural alteration activities is necessary. That’s why a Steering Committee has been set up for surveillance, assessment and to provide required instructions for efficacious implementation of different programmes to be adopted under ERI movement.
The FSSAI recommended members in the Steering Committee include Commissioner, Food Safety, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Orissa, Punjab, Sikkim and Tamil Nadu. The representatives from industry include Ajay Khanna, MD, Herbalife; Deepak Iyer, MD, Mondelez; and Sudhir Sitapati, ED, food and refreshment, HUL.
In addition to the Steering Committee, the FSSAI has also declared constitution of an Executive Committee that would guide over the day to day operations of the Eat Right campaign and assist in coordination among the members of the Steering Committee.
The FSSAI established the Steering Committee with a goal to design and implement the ERI initiative wherein the committee would gather at least once every 6 months. On the other hand, the Executive Committee will meet once in 30 days and shall audit the project on quarterly basis.
“An Executive Committee to monitor day to day tasks regarding ERI initiative and to synchronize with line ministries, departments has also been set up in this regard,” states an order by FSSAI.
The members of Executive Committee include FSSAI’s CEO; Chairperson; Executive Director-Finance; Executive Director- Compliance Strategy; Head- Quality Assurance Division; Head- Regulatory, Compliance Division; Director-Training; and Director-ERI; will be the convener.
