FrieslandCampina is taking another step in its sustainability ambitions: the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved FrieslandCampina’s tightened near-term science-based emissions reduction targets. In line with SBTi’s requirements, the company has broken down its emission targets for scopes 1, 2, and 3 into emissions from forestry, land use, and agriculture (FLAG emissions), and others. The science-based targets align with the Paris Climate Agreement’s commitment to limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Tightened climate targets
In addition to the breakdown of emission targets, the base year has been adjusted from 2015 to 2020, allowing for more accurate reporting. Additionally, FrieslandCampina will report on more emission sources from 2025 onwards. The new 1.5ºC-aligned emission reduction targets are:
- 30.3% reduction of absolute scope 1 and 3 FLAG greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 from the 2020 base year.
- 42.13% reduction of absolute scope 1, 2, and 3 non-Flag (or Energy & Industry related) greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 from the 2020 base year.
Science-Based Targets initiative
SBTi is a globally recognized platform that supports companies in setting and validating climate targets, and FrieslandCampina’s has already committed to setting near-term company-wide emission reduction targets in line with climate science with the SBTi in 2020. The updated targets to the latest methodology were assessed in 2024 and approved by SBTi in early 2025.
Good nutrition in balance with the planet
With its dairy products, FrieslandCampina feeds millions of people worldwide. FrieslandCampina recognizes the need to reduce the impact of food production on the climate. Not only to combat global warming but also to promote food security. FrieslandCampina’s ambition is to achieve net climate-neutral production by 2050 at the latest.
On 18 February 2025, FrieslandCampina will present its annual figures for 2024 including initiatives and progress on sustainability goals. The company will report on the tightened targets for the first time in 2026 for 2025.
Energy & Industry: Royal FrieslandCampina N.V. commits to reduce absolute scope 1, 2, and scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services by 42.13% by 2030 from a 2020 base year. The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.
FLAG: Royal FrieslandCampina commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 3 FLAG GHG emissions by 30.3% by 2030 from a 2020 base year. The target includes FLAG emissions and removals.
