Food Authority FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) has published a draft regulations  to amend the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018.

Food Authority FSSAI proposes to make with previous approval of the Central Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 92 read with section 23 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (34 of 2006) as required under sub-section (1) of section 92 of the Act.

Food Authority FSSAI has further informed that the said draft regulations shall be taken into consideration after the expiry of the period of sixty days from the date on which copies of the Gazette in which this notification is published are made available to the public.

The apex body of food safety has invited suggestions and objections to the Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, FDA Bhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi- 110002 or may be sent by email at their official email address.

FSSAI will only consider the objections and suggestions within the mentioned time period.

A glimpse at the draft regulations;

  • These regulations may be called the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Amendment Regulations, 2022.
  • In the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018, in regulation 4, in sub-regulation (4), for clause (e) the following shall be substituted, namely, —

Products made of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) may be used for packaging, storing, carrying or dispensing of food products as and when standards and guidelines are notified by the Food Authority. Such packaging materials shall also comply with any other national standards/regulations as applicable.’

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is a statutory body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India.
